Set in 1918 during the onset of America’s entrance into World War 1, Sophia finds herself with not just one son, but two sons involved in the war against Germany. Her greatest fear is not being able to get to either of them if they need her. Bettie also has to bid her son farewell as he voluntarily enlists. He makes a promise to her that he will return. Can he keep that promise? Alma recently lost her husband, leaving her to raise and support their children. Thankfully, the older sons can help to manage their father's grocery market while Alma continues to teach at the local school. Connie has already suffered the loss of her son who was the first fatality of the U.S. Naval Aviation. Her experience allows her to help the other mothers in these trying times. Other townspeople are busy supporting the war effort through the local Red Cross, the Boy Scouts of America, and the Campfire Girls as they prepare medical supplies and sell Liberty Bonds. And if that wasn't enough, an Influenza Epidemic hits the community, bringing it to an abrupt standstill.
